Big Sean talks collaborating with Eminem: 'It was a crazy surprise'

When Big Sean rapped alongside Jay Z and Kanye West on "Clique" in 2012, the Finally Famous MC proved that he can go bar-for-bar with the best of them, but just in case you forgot, he once again put his expert lyricism on display when he jumped on Eminem's "Detroit Vs. Everybody."

The Statik Selektah-produced hometown anthem is a standout on Em's recently-released Shady XV anniversary compilation and features Marshall and Sean, as well as Royce da 5'9," Danny Brown, Dej Loaf and Trick Trick.

"'Detroit Vs. Everybody' means a lot to me, that's just not a song or a clothing line, that's a mentality. People from Detroit, we carry that on our backs," Sean told MTV News on Tuesday.

Sean says it was an honor to record with Em, who he always looked up to. "He's definitely, obviously, coming from the D, he's the biggest rapper, he sold out Wembley Stadium [in London] two nights in a row. That's like 90,000 or something like that," he said. "It was a honor being on there."

The G.O.O.D. Music MC was visiting his grandmother when he got the call from Em to come to the studio. "He was a cool, cool ass dude and we just talked and vibed and listened to the beat for the song and just finished the song up," he recalled.

While some would feel pressure rhyming alongside Eminem, Sean just did what he usually does. "I just approached the song, I didn't really think too hard, I just went in, I just did my thing," he explained. "When you're in situations like that, you can't overthink it because when you think too hard you can't get nothing done. You just gotta focus and let it flow and that's what did."

Big Sean also told MTV News that there is a "Detroit Vs. Everybody" music video in the works and told Revolt that a sequel in the works.
