Super Bowl 2017‬‬

Photo

The New England Patriots will compete in their N.F.L.-record ninth Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 5 in Houston, matched up against Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons’ top-ranked offense. Here’s what to look for in Super Bowl LI:
■ Tom Brady set a personal postseason record with 384 passing yards in the Patriots’ A.F.C. championship victory, but he may have even more opportunities against a Falcons defense that had been weak all season until it delivered a shockingly-effective performance against Green Bay in the N.F.C. championship game.
■ The Falcons were able to pummel an injury-depleted Packers defense, but will have a lot more trouble against a New England defense that traded away two of its biggest stars and seemed to only get better, holding opponents to an N.F.L.-low 15.4 points a game this season.
■ Both teams will be looking for more from their running games. The Patriots managed just 57 rushing yards and the Falcons, despite a pair of highly-regarded running backs in Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, had just 101, with 23 coming from quarterback Matt Ryan.
■ While Brady and Ryan may not provide much bulletin-board material in the weeks leading up to the game, fans and journalists can look forward to extended access with the outspoken Martellus Bennett of the Patriots. And people may finally get a chance to appreciate just how great Julio Jones of the Falcons has been throughout his career.

■ The Patriots are certainly not lacking Super Bowl appearances, with this representing the seventh chance for a ring in the Tom Brady Era. The Falcons are in mostly uncharted territory for them, as the team has not appeared in a Super Bowl since the Chris Chandler-led 1998 team. Tevin Coleman, one of the team’s running backs, was only 5 when the Falcons lost to John Elway and the Denver Broncos.
Here’s how the Patriots and Falcons advanced to Super Bowl LI:

Tom Brady and Chris Hogan Too Much for Steelers

Tom Brady of the New England Patriots will get a chance to be the first quarterback to win five Super Bowls after a 36-17 dismantling of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the A.F.C. championship game.
From start to finish on Sunday, Brady and the Patriots offense had the Steelers’ defense on its heels. The 16-year veteran completed 32 of 42 passes for 384 yards and 3 touchdowns, overcoming a fairly pedestrian game by his team’s running backs, and the absence of Rob Gronkowski, in a total dissection of a defense that had been one of the toughest to score against in the playoffs.
Patriots-Steelers Box Score
Brady found Julian Edelman for a fairly typical 8 receptions for 118 yards, but it was Chris Hogan, a deep threat acquired via free agency this off-season, who proved to be the game’s dominant star, catching 9 passes for a franchise playoff record 180 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The star-studded Pittsburgh offense, meanwhile, struggled to do anything for much of the game. Star running back Le’Veon Bell missed most of the game with a groin injury, and the team was unable to get things going without their best player.
Ben Roethlisberger did manage a personal postseason best 13 consecutive completions at one point, and threw for 314 passing yards, but he continued to struggle on the opponents’ half of the field, just as he had last week in a divisional round victory over Kansas City. If not for a garbage time touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, he would have gone consecutive postseason games without a touchdown pass for the first time in his career.

four-game suspension to Brady at the beginning of the season, will now head to Houston to face the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI. It is the team’s ninth Super Bowl appearance, with Brady accounting for all four of the team’s wins and two of their losses (both to the Giants). Brady will be looking to join Charley Haley as the only players with five Super Bowl rings, and would break a tie at four for the most wins by a quarterback, a record he currently shares with Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana.
In an on-field interview after the game, an ebullient Brady said hello to his family before addressing the difficult start to the season in an indirect way.
“This team showed a lot of mental toughness over the course of the year,” he said. “It was a great win tonight.”

Falcons Dismantle Packers to Advance to Super Bowl LI

Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons offense kept their feet on the gas for an entire game, resulting in a fast-paced 44-21 victory over the Green Bay Packers in the N.F.C. championship game. The lopsided victory punched Atlanta’s ticket to Super Bowl LI, where they’ll play either the New England Patriots or the Pittsburgh Steelers.
From the start, the injury-depleted Packers defense did not stand a chance to even slow down Ryan and the Falcons. The Pro Bowl quarterback completed 27 of 38 passes for 392 yards and 4 touchdowns, exploiting mismatches all over the field, with Julio Jones leading the way with 9 catches for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns.
It was the eighth consecutive game that Atlanta has scored a touchdown on their opening drive, and the Packers lost one more defensive back as Kentrell Brice was hurt while defending on the opening kickoff.
In a televised interview following the game, Ryan was all smiles as the crowd made “M.V.P.” chants.
“This guy next to me is a war hero,” he said of Julio Jones. “He’s a beast.”
The Packers made a valiant effort in the second half to close what had been a 24-0 deficit at halftime, but the huge lead for Atlanta, and the Falcons’ unwillingness to take any plays off, made that impossible.
After the game, Packers Coach Mike McCarthy admitted his team was outplayed. “We ran into a buzz saw,” McCarthy told reporters. “Those guys performed great. We didn’t have enough to keep up with them.”
The frustration on Aaron Rodgers’ face was a constant as he was repeatedly let down by his receivers and spent most of the game having drives end with nothing to show for them even when they put up plenty of yardage. Rodgers finished the game with 287 yards and 3 passing touchdowns, but it was not nearly enough to keep pace with Ryan.

Part of the problem for the Packers was a complete lack of a running game, with Rodgers managing 46 yards but the rest of the team combining for just 33.
The Falcons defense, which struggled to limit scoring during the season, did enough to win the day, as Atlanta outgained Green Bay 493 to 369 in terms of total yards and the Falcons forced two turnovers while the Packers were unable to force any.

ESPN host Sage Steele criticized for complaining about Trump airport protest

After hosting NBA Countdown on Sunday afternoon alongside Jalen Rose, ESPN host Sage Steele was making her way to Los Angeles International airport to catch a flight to Houston when she was caught up in a large protest of President Trump's executive order on immigration.

On Friday, Trump issued an executive order barring refugees and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. The order led to migrants being detained at airports across the country, and in Philadelphia caused two families from Syria to be turned away and sent back home.

As a result, massive crowds protested the action at airports across the country on Sunday, including LAX, where Steele was attempting to catch a flight to Houston, where she’ll spend the next week covering the Super Bowl.

Because of the size of the protest, Steele was forced to walk two miles to reach her gate, and ultimately ended up missing her flight.

Steele hopped on Instagram to vent her frustration at the crowd, saying she was sad so many protesters were happy with the disruption they were causing, adding, “Yes, immigrants were affected by this as well. Brilliant.”

Steele didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Predictably, the post led to criticism on social media, with several sports reporters and television anchors joining the fray and questioning her comments.
Longtime Sports Illustrated writer and NFL network analyst Michael Silver was among the critics, telling Steele he had “tremendous respect” for her, but in terms of the protests, “Sometimes standing up for what's right provokes inconvenience and all.”

Starbucks plans to hire 10,000 refugees in response to Trump travel ban

Starbucks has had the perfect response to Trump's 'Muslim ban'

The CEO of Starbucks has vowed to hire 10,000 refugees in response to Donald Trump’s ban on people claiming asylum.
Trump’s decision to temporarily ban people from seven mostly Muslim countries from entering the country has caused shockwaves around the world, as well his order to ban Syrians indefinitely and suspend the refugee programme for 120 days.

‘There are more than 65 million citizens of the world recognised as refugees by the United Nations, and we are developing plans to hire 10,000 of them over five years in the 75 countries around the world where Starbucks does business,’ he said.
Howard Schultz, who runs Starbucks, responded in an open letter to staff, saying that he would do what he could to defend civil liberties and protect the most vulnerable.
The first people he will seek to hire are refugees who helped the US military (such as Hameed Khalid Darweesh, an Iraqi translator who worked for US for 10 years and was detained at JFK Airport on Saturday).

‘We will start this effort here in the US by making the initial focus of our hiring efforts on those individuals who have served with US troops as interpreters and support personnel in the various countries where our military has asked for such support,’ he said.

‘We are living in an unprecedented time, one in which we are witness to the conscience of our country, and the promise of the American Dream, being called into question,’ he said.
He said he was writing the letter with ‘deep concern, a heavy heart and a resolute promise’ and described the ‘confusion, surprise and opposition’ which flowed from Donald Trump’s executive order.
Mr Schultz also expressed alarm about the administration’s tone towards Mexico, saying he wanted to ‘build bridges, not walls’.
‘We stand ready to help and support our Mexican customers, partners and their families as they navigate what impact proposed trade sanctions, immigration restrictions and taxes might have on their business and their trust of Americans,’ he said.

SAG Awards 2017: Winona Ryder’s reaction faces to Stranger Things win sparks internet memes

The US actress could contain her emotions during David Harbour's speech

Winona Ryder became the star of this year’s SAG Awards thanks to her hilarious reaction to Stranger Things’ big win.
The American actress sparked a stream of internet memes after pulling some very revealing facial expressions during co-star David Harbour’s acceptance speech.
Ryder stood alongside Harbour as he thanked the Screen Actors Guild for the Best Ensemble Drama trophy and proceeded to give a rousing speech about recent political events.
“As we act in the continuing narrative of Stranger Things, we 1983 Midwesterners will repel bullies,” he said.

“We will shelter freaks and outcasts, those who have no home. We will get past the lies. We will hunt monsters.

JUSTIN BIEBER SLAMMED TO THE GLASS BY CHRIS PRONGER AT NHL CELEB GAME

Justin Bieber got plastered to the plexiglass at Staples Center...but at least he seemed to take it all in stride.
The Biebs played for Team Gretzky at the NHL All-Star Celebrity Shootout on Saturday night and acquitted himself well in the box score, netting a goal and an assist.
But Hall of Famer Chris Pronger, who's still technically a member of the Arizona Coyotes because of contractual reasons, didn't take it easy on the heartthrob.
While Bieber had the puck, Pronger slid up behind him and smashed him to the glass, grinding his helmet into it.

WWE Mock Royal Rumble 2017

Credit:

WWE is basically having two WrestleManias this year, and one of them is being called the Royal Rumble. Set to take place in the Alamodome, all hands are on deck for a supershow that very well may rival its Orlando showcase in April. In fact, the 2017 Royal Rumble is expected to be WWE’s biggest non-WrestleMania event of all time.
Given the star-power and envious lineup of living legends and top stars, NXT hipsters are sure to be extra smug when they proclaim that NXT Takeoveer: San Antonio was a better wrestling show than the Rumble.
In any event, the Royal Rumble in the Alamodome is set to blow away all other shows as potentially the most successful Royal Rumble of all time. When WWE was last at the Alamodome for the Royal Rumble in 1996, the business was pay-per-view driven. The allure of surprise entrants wasn’t as strong. The Attitude Era was just starting to take form. This time around, the entire Attitude Era could very well be same ring with the gift of nostalgia on its side.
Paid Attendance Projection
Last year’s Royal Rumble drew an announced attendance of 15,170, but this was held in the Amway Center of Orlando. In the massive Alamodome this year, WWE has been throwing around a figure of “over 60,000 fans,” which will be the announced attendance regardless of whether it’s true. WWE announced an attendance of 101,763 in its finest hour inside AT&T Stadium during WrestleMania 32. According to SEC filings however, the paid attendance was estimated between 74,000 and 86,000. Even going with the higher end of the actual attendance, WWE’s sports entertainment figure is inflated by over 15%. WWe is certain to announce a sports entertainment figure of close to 61,000 for the Rumble, but that number is going to have to be adjusted for inflation:
Prediction: 53,043 paid attendees
